Plaka Street Art

Posted by Barbara (Oakland, United States) on 6 November 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

This is another image taken during my trip to Athens two years ago. As I wandered about the Plaka, I was struck by just how much graffitti was on the buildings. My initial reaction was "oh, no!"...but...as I kept looking around, I realized that this graffitti is an art form all of its own. I do not know how the building's owners feel about this, but from my perspective, I began to see it as quite beautiful. So, I took out my camera and began framing the art, just as though it were hanging in any gallery.

Lovely colours.. Art or Not is depending on peoples experience I guess.. Like you mentioned the owner of this building might not think this is Art.

I think you might be right, Barbara. This graffitti doesn't look profane and debased. I don't speak Greek but I can tell by its appearance that it is a creative/positive expression. What a contrast to the last few day's posts! I hope your trip is going well.
