Lily Pond

Posted by
Barbara Lee (Oakland, United States) on 4 October 2009 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

In August, when I was in Acadia National Park in Maine, I tried for 4 days to get good light at the top of Cadillac Mountain. It was not to be. Rising early and making the drive in search of the light - I was met with fog. One morning, determined to capture a good image in the morning light, I took off on a quick circle around all of Mt. Desert Island. If you are not in the park, it is hard to get to the coast - private homes block your access. Eventually, I noticed a public library in Southwest Harbor which fronted on the bay. I pulled over and walked toward the water's edge. When I saw this pond just next to the library, I stopped dead in my tracks. Here were hundreds of water lily pads, glowing in the early morning light. The day before, we had experienced a drenching downpour which left water droplets on the lily pads. Here was, at last, a spot worthy of the morning.

I hope you enjoy it. I think that the pattern and the intense color make it a keeper. By the way, if anyone asks, yes, this IS the color of this scene. The intense saturation of the lily pads comes from the early morning light. What a treat it was to run across this little pond. Not at all what I had set out to photograph that day. So many times, I find that the best images in my camera are not at all what I had in mind at the beginning of an outing. Staying open to possibilities and keeping what I call a "beginner's mind" may lead us to images like this.

Thanks to everyone for their comments! Having a polarizer really helped with this shot. I never leave home without it. It was truly a magical scene to run across - aren't those sometimes our best shots?
