As the full wolf moon (when the moon gets closest to the earth, it appears very large and is called a wolf moon) sets, the rising sun illuminates Manly Beacon. This illumination lasts only for a moment. Every one of the about 30 photographers who were lined up at the Zabriski Point overlook with their tripods pointed west knew, as I did, that they had better be there early so as not to miss the morning show. On this particular February morning, the rising light was made so much more special by the setting sun, which gave a special grace note to the whole scene.
