After the full moon had slipped behind the Sierras, another show started to happen to the east. As the rising sun began its daily ascent, it cast a magical orange glow over the Alabama Hills. This light is fleeting - a photographer must work fast to capture its radiance before the whole scene is washed out in the bright early morning light. I framed this image so that the peak of the Alabama Hills on the right would echo the peak of Mt. Whitney to the left, making a composition of complementary shapes.
I feel so fortunate to be able to access magical places like this, just a few hours from my home here in Oakland. And I enjoy sharing these moments with the rest of you. Let us never forget what a wonderful planet we live on, and let us do all in our powers to protect our earth.
