Sunrise - Vista del Malpais, Anza Borrego Badlands

Posted by
Barbara Lee (Oakland, United States) on 5 April 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

When I was down in Anza Borrego I spent a day with another photographer who had a four wheel drive, which allowed us to get back on the sandy desert washes. We rose at dawn and drove to the Vista del Malpais, which affords a view of the badlands from the back - the opposite view from that which you get at Fonts Point.

It was magical to watch the sun move across the rocks - the color and shadows changed every moment. Ten minutes, and it was all over. Just proves the point - again - that we gotta rise super early to get the good pictures. It's worth it!

Once again, your color is fantastic. There is a real sense of space and distance as the badlands stretch toward the mountains, giving way to the grasslands.

@David: David, I am glad you noticed the grasslands in the distance. Maybe wildflowers! The desert is, indeed, a magical place. I was lucky to have been able to get out there - my car would never have made it. A 4WD is the only way to go!
