Redwood Sorrell in Muir Woods

Posted by
Barbara Lee (Oakland, United States) on 12 July 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

We did an easy hike through Muir Woods yesterday, showing our So Cal family the wonders of our coastal redwoods. I had actually hoped for fog, but when we arrived, the trails were in full sun. So, again, I concentrated at the jewels at my feet. The Redwood Sorrell is everywhere, but not much of it has blossoms. We saw a few lilac blooms and these white ones. I must be attracted to greens, I certainly have been finding a lot of it in my lens lately! And, yes, I do love green. It is such a fresh and cooling hue. Please enjoy these tiny lights of the redwood forest floor.

The redwoods are such a fun place to find great light and little treasures like this!

Barbara, this is fabulous! The detail and texture of the leaves are beautiful. I like how you framed and exposed this. I have always wanted to visit Muir Woods. The next time I go to California (probably next June or July), I want to spend a day in the San Francisco/Marin County area. Can you recommend some good places to go for nature photography?

@Julie Brown: Well, I would certainly start here! And I'd get there at dawn, before the tourists show up. You can park and have it all to yourself. There are so many places to see - how could you get it all into a day!? And I'd get out to the coast in Point Reyes. Drake's Beach is a favorite of mine, Limantour Beach is wonderful too. Check it out online. In one day - really - start at dawn in the redwoods and end the day on the coast. A lot to pack in to one day. There is NO shortage of subjects!

Thanks for that advice Barbara. I anticipate that one day will be all I have because I will be driving to Yosemite/Mono Lake. I went to Point Reyes in 1999, and I think we were at Drake's Beach at sunset. Marin County is beautiful, and the people were very friendly in the towns we visited.

Beautifully exposed - especially to render the bg dark. Lovely light on your subject!

Beautiful exposure. I like the composition. The single blossom is highlighted beautifully-- I don't know if that was from the original exposure or from dodging & burning-- but very nice final result.
