Light in the Narrows

Posted by
Barbara Lee (Oakland, United States) on 5 November 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I walked for 7 1/2 hours yesterday in the Virgin River, which flows through the Zion Narrows. It was an exhilirating, breathtaking, and very, very tiring day. I wore special dry pants and shoes, and in addition to my tripod, carried a big walking stick. Camera safely stowed away in a dry bag in myh daypack. I cannot count the number of times I opened that dry bag to take the camera out, get it on the tripod, and make another image. And were there images to be made! WOW!

I am one tired but happy woman tonight! Zion has all of my sense on full alert. If you ever get a chance to come here, do it in the fall. The summer crowds are gone, you can drive wherever you want to (they require you to ride a shuttle through Oct. 31) and most of the visitors are other friendly photographers!

A classic canyon scene of the southwest. Very nice saturated color. I am impressed at your ability to walk all day. You must be in great shape. Do you go on these adventures by yourself, or was this with a group?

@Julie Brown: Hi Julie, since my husband is still working, I do most of these adventures alone. I really do like taking photo trips solo. I find that I can focus more on creating my images that way. And I always meet nice folks along the way. Here in Zion, especially, there are a ton of great photogs. I met several in the river and walked with some of them for a bit. I am pretty independent - always have beem - and reallhy prefer traveling alone for the most part. Maybe it is also selfish! I can set my own schedule. :-)
