Costa Rican Iguana Displays Mating Coloration

Posted by
Barbara Lee (Oakland, United States) on 21 January 2011 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

A shot from Torteguero National Park in Costa Rica. We were cruising down one of the canals when this big fellow showed himself. He stood stock still long enough for me to get a few good photos, and then took off through the underbrush like a bolt of lightning! I did not know that they could move so fast! This is a green iguana, but he is trying to attract females, so he has become brilliantly orange.

NIKON D90 1/30 second F/5.6 ISO 640 225 mm (35mm equiv.)
