Snow on Mt. Diablo

Posted by
Barbara Lee (Oakland, United States) on 22 February 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Yes, we have had a really cold week in Northern California. Yesterday, I hiked in Briones Regional Park, east of Oakland. At the top of our hill climb - about 1400 feet, we had a glorious 360 view all around the bay area, including Mt. Diablo in Contra Costa County, which was covered with snow. We usually get snow on Mt. Diablo once or twice a year. It a spectacular sight! I loved the patterns of sunlight on the green hills formed by the passing clouds. If you live near Orinda, get over to Briones. It is a fabulous park which is relatively undiscovered. Just be prepared to dodge the cow patties - it is rangeland for 3 ranchers who have gotten permits from the park district to graze their cattle here.

Oh, this is a fabulous shot. Wait 'til you see the image I am posting
of the other side of the mountain...quite different.
I love the swoop of the foreground hills that create a kind of frame for the snow-covered peaks.

Wow this is wonderfully done, Barbara! It's always such a treat to see the snow in the Bay Area you noted, it doesn't occur that much. (Stephen has a nice shot of the bay and Mt Tam today)...I love the clouds, how you have detailed them - just fantastic as a background for Diablo. The trees and grass are beautiful that SHEEP I see there?!? TOO COOL!
AT least cow patties can normally be seen, Sheep...well, I will stop! This is a fresh and invigorating view for sure...I can breath it in from way back here...thanks for making me homesick ;-) More snow hitting you later this week ??

@Denny Jump Photo: Hi Denny, thanks for the comment! No, those are not sheep, but rocks. The only hoofed creatures in Briones are cows - lots of them! Who is Stephen? Can you give me his whole name so that I can find his blog at Aminus? I'd love to check out his Mt. Tam photo!

Spectacular scene! I like the warm greens in the foreground contrasted with the snowy mountain. I wish I could say that we'd had a cold week, while looking at green grass ;) All I see is white... and more white.
